History
In 2003, Dr. Joel Selanikio and Rose Donna pooled decades of experience in global health, disaster response, technology, and international development to develop technology that would enable easier mobile data collection for NGOs and nonprofits, forming DataDyne (now Magpi).
Recognizing that the most expensive element of any data collection activity at the time was the money spent on programmers and tech consultants, they produced EpiSurveyor, the first self-service, cloud-based application in the development sector. Often described as “like Gmail but for data collection,” EpiSurveyor brought Silicon Valley ways of scaling software to global health and international development.
Since its introduction, and name change to “Magpi” in 2013, the software has evolved and been adapted to new use cases, in industries as diverse as microfinance, energy, education, governance, health, and supply chain. Non-profits, government agencies, and commercial organizations have all realized the benefits of a powerful, but inexpensive and easy-to-configure mobile data and data visualization system.
Cloud-based and user-configurable, Magpi doesn't force users to maintain expensive servers, or to hire programmers. With free and paid versions, Magpi allows every organization, at any budget level, in any location, to improve the effectiveness of their mobile workforce. Dr. Joel Selanikio – CEO & Co-founder
Dr. Joel Selanikio is an award-winning physician, inventor, emergency responder, and public speaker who leads development of the multiple-award-winning Magpi mobile data collection and messaging software – the most widely scaled mobile technology ever created for international development.
In December 2014 – January 2015, he was the lead physician at the IMC Ebola Treatment Center at Lunsar, Sierra Leone.
Dr. Selanikio is a frequent keynote speaker and consultant in the fields of innovation, artificial intelligence, mobile, and big data — and especially the application of those technologies to social entrepreneurship, public and global health, healthcare, child health, epidemiology, international development, and emergency and disaster preparedness and outbreak response. He has consulted or spoken on these topics at Davos, TEDx, Foo Camp, Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Google, DARPA, CNN, Fox News, the Clinton Global Initiative, the Royal Society of Medicine, and many other very prominent venues and organizations. He is a judge for the GSMA Global Mobile Awards, and is a winner of both the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability and the Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Award.
Dr. Selanikio has been profiled by the Guardian, Wired, Forbes, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, the BBC, NPR, Information Week, and the Washington Post, among many other publications. He is a practicing pediatrician, and is a former Wall Street computer consultant, and former CDC epidemiologist. As an officer of the Public Health Service, Dr. Selanikio served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer, and later as Chief of Operations for the HHS Secretary’s Emergency Command Center after the 9/11 attacks. In 2005, he was given the Haverford Award for Humanitarian Service for his work in treating tsunami victims in Aceh. He received his BA from Haverford College, and MD from Brown University Medical School.

Rose Donna – COO & Co-founder
Rose Donna, COO and co-founder of Magpi, is an experienced entrepreneur and innovator in mobile data collection. Rose leads Magpi’s strategic initiatives and manages consulting efforts for partner organizations around the world on a wide range of topics in data collection, mobile communications technology, and international health and development.
An experienced global project leader and manager with extensive expertise in international health and development and disaster response, Rose has had long collaborations with the International Federation of the Red Cross and the American Red Cross International Services. Based on that experience, she co-founded Magpi (formerly DataDyne) in 2003. Magpi’s configurable, web-based mobile application enables people in the field to quickly and easily collect data on any mobile device. Its mobile data collection application provides organizations across various industries an easy, cost-effective way to develop mobile forms and generate outgoing SMS and voice messaging campaigns.
Prior to co-founding Magpi, Rose spent seven years as a project manager for the American Red Cross’ information systems, integrating technology’s rapidly evolving potential with efforts in the developing world. Currently, her management skills are also put to use at the Wonderland Ballroom in Washington D.C., a neighborhood bar she co-owns with her husband.
Rose received a B.A. from the University of Detroit Mercy and an M.A. in information technology from American University.
